Application
The weasel is a specifically protected species in many provinces. With spatial developments, weasel habitats may disappear. In such cases, one solution is to install a weasel shelter as an alternative habitat. In addition, weasel shelters are also suitable for strengthening an existing habitat.

Design
The design of this provision is an optimisation of Dirk Criel’s design, which has been tested and used since the 1980s. The provision has been optimised for installation underneath a pile of branches. It is accessible via a PVC tube that protrudes from the pile of branches. The provision is also accessible through the large openings on both sides of the box.

Position
Mustelids use landscape structures as movement routes. Install the provision in or alongside a suitable continuous landscape structure.

Installation
The provision should be installed on a dry surface. If necessary, a suitable base can be created using a thin layer of gravel or a paving slab.

Place the provision and, if desired, add a small amount of hay to the maternity chamber. Then install the PVC tube. If required, the box can be covered with a piece of plastic for additional protection. Next, cover the provision with a pile of leaves and branches, creating a substantial protective heap.

Make sure that both side openings of the provision remain clear. For example, place a paving slab underneath the entrance of the PVC tube to prevent it from becoming overgrown. Depending on the situation, it may be necessary to shorten the PVC tube slightly. See the installation instructions in the appendix for further guidance.
