The municipality of Rijssen-Holten is joining forces with Rooftop Revolution to address climate change locally. Due to increasing urbanization, the region is facing more heat stress and flooding. To combat these challenges, the municipality is encouraging its residents to install a biodiverse green roof.
Residents can benefit from an attractive green roof grant scheme in Rijssen. Thanks to a unique combination of this grant and a collective purchasing discount, participants can install Unitura’s green roof systems on favourable terms. The initiative lowers the barrier for residents to green and cool their immediate surroundings, while contributing to greater biodiversity across the municipality.
The success of this initiative lies in its practical support and financial incentives. Under normal circumstances, the installation of a high-quality green roof costs around €50 per square metre. Through the Rijssen-Holten scheme, however, this cost was reduced to just €30 per square metre. The more residents who participated, the greater the collective discount became, making green roofs even more accessible to the local community.
In addition to the reduced cost, participants received support with their grant applications and advice on the technical installation of their green roof. Unitura was also present on site in Holten to provide information and answer residents’ questions. To further encourage participation, we gave away four complete green roofs to registered applicants. This personal approach helped generate strong community engagement and resulted in a visible increase in urban greening throughout the neighbourhood.
Unitura’s ready-to-install EcoRoof Cassettes offer far more than a standard sedum roof. Each EcoRoofCassette contains a carefully selected mix of forty different native plant species. This diversity creates a resilient vegetation layer capable of thriving in both sunny and shaded conditions. As a result, the system is suitable for almost any shed, garage or residential property.
A biodiverse green roof also helps mitigate the effects of extreme weather conditions. During periods of heavy rainfall, the vegetation and substrate retain and absorb water, helping to reduce surface water runoff and the risk of flooding. During heatwaves, the stored water evaporates, providing natural cooling. This can help lower indoor temperatures and reduce the urban heat island effect. In short, a green roof grant in Rijssen delivers immediate benefits in terms of energy efficiency, climate resilience and residential comfort.
Our EcoHabitatRoof concepts take biodiversity a step further by creating dedicated nesting opportunities for birds. By incorporating nesting features and specially designed substrate compositions, these roofs can be tailored to support species associated with coastal and open grassland habitats. The result is a biodiverse green roof that provides not only vegetation, but also valuable nesting and breeding opportunities for birds.
