This basic nest box has been designed as a semi-open nest box for species such as the black redstart. The box can be easily incorporated into masonry.
Within this product line, similar nest boxes are also available for other species, such as the GZP2 (swift), HMP2 (house sparrow), SPP1 (starling), VLP1 (butterfly) and ISP1 (insects).
Suitable for
This nest box has been specifically designed for species that use semi-open cavities. Species that may use this nest box include the black redstart and the white wagtail.
The boxes should be installed in a dispersed arrangement. Due to the territorial behaviour of the species that use these boxes, clustering multiple boxes together is less effective.
Design
The box is made from woodcrete. During the design process, specific attention was paid to the depth of the box. Thanks to its limited depth, the box can also be integrated effectively into the façades of houses with limited cavity space.
Because of its discreet design, the nest box can be installed in almost any façade type.
To reduce the risk of water ingress, the box has been thickened around the entrance and shaped with an upward slope. This makes it more difficult for rainwater to enter the box.
Importance of nest boxes
Current methods of renovation and construction are reducing the available space for black redstarts and white wagtails to establish themselves. An integrated nest box that can be incorporated into masonry therefore provides an effective way to offer these species both a shelter and a breeding site.
