Bat towers in Blaricum: supply and installation | Unitura
Using bat towers as an effective mitigation measure
The assignment
Rutges Vernieuwt approached Unitura to deliver mitigation measures for a project in Blaricum. Due to the historic character of the properties, it was not possible to install temporary bat roost features directly onto the buildings. As an alternative, bat towers were installed within the front and rear gardens of the properties. These structures provide suitable alternative roost opportunities for bats while preserving the architectural character of the buildings and ensuring compliance with ecological requirements.
Methodology
For this project, a total of seven VMPT1 bat towers were installed. Bat towers are a proven and effective mitigation measure, providing alternative roost opportunities where conventional bat roost features cannot be integrated into buildings. Because we maintain a large stock of bat towers, we are able to respond quickly and support projects with demanding timescales. Our project managers are always happy to help identify the most suitable solution for your specific project. From product selection through to installation, Unitura can provide a complete service. Installation is carried out by our experienced specialist teams, supported by the appropriate equipment and machinery to ensure efficient and professional delivery.
Implementation app with reporting
All planned works are recorded in our field operations app during the preparation phase. Once completed, every installation is documented with photographs and detailed project records. Upon completion of the project, we provide a comprehensive report in the form of a secure link or PDF document.
This information can then be used by the ecological consultant as part of the ecological project record and monitoring programme. It also serves as clear evidence for the competent authority that all mitigation measures have been implemented correctly and in accordance with the approved ecological requirements.

The VMPT1 bat tower is a freestanding bat roost structure based on the well-established rocket box principle. The design incorporates multiple vertical chambers with varying crevice widths, providing suitable roosting conditions for a range of bat species. The tower can function as a summer roost, mating roost and maternity roost for species including the common pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), Nathusius’ pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii) and soprano pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus).
