Biodivers Groendak Unitura

Unitura's EcoHabitatRoof®.

Would you like to make a genuine contribution to local biodiversity? Then choose Unitura’s EcoHabitatRoof®! This biodiverse green roof creates habitat for insects and roof-nesting bird species. EcoHabitatRoof® is designed to maximise biodiversity!

Not a green space but a habitat

Each species has specific habitat requirements. Some species use roofs because buildings resemble artificial cliff faces, such as peregrine falcons and black redstarts. Other bird species use roofs because they share characteristics with dunes, shingle banks or riverbanks. EcoHabitatRoof® enables the creation of biodiverse roofs tailored to specific species. As a result, every roof has a unique design based on the requirements of its target species. This makes it much more than a green roof; it is a habitat roof.

EcoRoof Cassette

Create an optimally biodiverse green roof with Unitura’s EcoRoof Cassette®!
Each pre-grown cassette contains more than forty native species that are perfectly suited to rooftop conditions. The EcoRoof Cassettes® are manufactured from HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), a durable material that can withstand relatively high temperatures and is one of the most easily recycled polymers available.
The EcoRoof Cassettes® are sown with a mix of more than forty native species and sedum species. This rich diversity allows a varied vegetation layer to develop, delivering a significantly higher biodiversity value than traditional sedum roofs. A wide range of species has been intentionally included within the cassettes. This high level of diversity makes the cassettes suitable for use in almost any situation, while allowing different vegetation communities to develop depending on local conditions rather than creating the same type of vegetation on every roof.

New! ERL1 | EcoRoofLight
EcoRoof Light 1 is a lightweight sedum roof. It was developed for roofs that cannot support much weight, but do deserve the benefits of a green roof. The basis of the system consists of a 20 mm mineral wool that retains water, remains lightweight and provides a stable growing layer for sedum. As a result, the roof stays green longer, even in dry periods, without the need for a watering system. View the ERL1 here

Creating a healthy living environment

EcoHabitatRoof increases green space within urban environments. It creates unique habitats that support biodiversity and contribute to a healthier living environment for people. In addition, the green roof helps reduce rainwater runoff during periods of heavy rainfall. Another benefit of EcoHabitatRoof is its contribution to reducing the urban heat island effect. By retaining and evaporating water, the green roof provides natural cooling, helping to lower temperatures in the surrounding area. This contributes to a more pleasant microclimate and can help reduce the demand for energy used for cooling.

Roof-dwelling birds

Many coastal and farmland bird species are under increasing pressure, as safe nesting sites are disappearing at a rapid rate. As a result, many species are seeking refuge on rooftops. Due to their elevated position, roofs can provide ideal nesting sites for roof nesting bird species. Creating a suitable habitat for these species requires several key elements, including suitable nesting substrate or nest boxes, shelter and cover, access to water and, in some cases, food sources. Not every roof is suitable for every species. EcoHabitatRoof® provides the flexibility to tailor each roof to the requirements of specific species.

Seed bank of native species

Native plant species with genuinely local origins are under increasing pressure. The widespread use of commercial wildflower mixtures and garden plants can dilute the unique genetic characteristics of local plant populations. EcoHabitatRoof® uses native species of local provenance sourced from Dutch natural habitats. The species rich wildflower vegetation mix contains more than forty species. After flowering, some of the seeds are naturally dispersed by the wind into the surrounding area. As a result, your roof becomes a local seed bank of native plant material.

Benefits of our Biodivers Green Roof

Enhances Property Value
Sustainability plays an increasingly important role in property valuation. With EcoHabitatRoof®, you demonstrate a commitment to environmentally responsible initiatives and a reduced ecological footprint. This appeals to investors, tenants and buyers who value sustainability and green initiatives, helping to increase the attractiveness and value of your property.

Reduces Urban Heat
In urban environments, buildings and paved surfaces absorb and retain large amounts of heat, creating the urban heat island effect. Green roofs help reduce this effect. The vegetation acts as natural insulation, lowering roof temperatures and limiting heat transfer into the building, helping to maintain cooler indoor temperatures. In addition, plants provide extra cooling through evaporation, which can help lower temperatures in the immediate surroundings, particularly during warmer summer months.
