Biodivers Groendak Unitura

Unitura's Biodiverse Green Façade

We create true habitats with our biodiverse green facades. Each facade is carefully designed to include the elements needed to transform a wall into a vertical habitat for wildlife.
By combining features for birds, bats, small mammals and insects with climbing plants, exceptionally diverse facades can be created. Biodiverse green facades can provide habitat for more than one hundred different animal species.

The opportunities of facades

Many cities have more vertical surface area than horizontal space. A building has four facades but only one roof. Building facades are often overlooked when it comes to urban greening. However, facades can make a valuable contribution to the city as a habitat. By greening facades and combining them with the right wildlife provisions, valuable microhabitats can be created.

Climbing plants as a base

From an ecological perspective, green facades based on climbing plants growing from ground level offer the greatest benefits. Native climbing plants attract a wide variety of insects and butterflies. In addition, climbing plants provide natural nesting sites and shelter for a range of songbirds and small mammals. For this reason, Unitura exclusively uses green facade systems based on climbing plants.

NEW: Green wall mesh system

Discover our new cable mesh system. This smart solution allows us to green urban buildings even more effectively, from facade to roof. Thanks to its flexible design, vegetation can grow in places where this was previously not possible. The result is a greener urban environment that is not only more attractive, but also healthier, cooler and more biodiverse.

Our Biodiverse Green Wall

Our EcoHabitatWall® products are designed to make all types of external walls greener and more biodiverse. Each facade is created using a unique combination of nest boxes, bat boxes, insect features and suitable climbing plants. This allows every facade to develop into a living green facade. Our biodiverse green facades remain attractive throughout the year and require very little maintenance.

Why choose our biodiverse Green Wall?
Maximum biodiversity
Cooling effect
Building value increase
CO2 reduction

Biodiversity enhancing

Our EcoHabitatWall® creates habitat for a wide range of animal species, including birds, butterflies, bees and other insects. These species can find shelter, forage for food and establish nesting sites, helping to enhance local biodiversity in urban environments.

Less noise pollution

EcoHabitatWall® helps reduce noise pollution. The presence of a green facade helps to absorb surrounding noise. The plants and their irregular forms have a sound insulating effect, absorbing sound vibrations and dispersing sound waves in different directions.

CO2 reduction

EcoHabitatWall® contributes to reducing CO₂ concentrations in the air. The plants growing on the facade absorb CO₂ and convert it into glucose and oxygen, helping to improve air quality. This natural process of carbon sequestration can be applied effectively within the built environment, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable urban environment.

Value increase building

Sustainability plays an increasingly important role in property valuation. With EcoHabitatWall®, you demonstrate a commitment to environmentally responsible initiatives and a reduced ecological footprint. This appeals to investors, tenants and buyers who value sustainability and green initiatives, helping to increase the attractiveness and value of your property.

Cooling effect

Our native climbing plants naturally absorb water and release it through their leaves by evaporation. This process creates a cooling effect both inside and around the building. The green facade acts as a protective layer against high temperatures.

Our dream; a nature-inclusive city

At Unitura, we are passionate about our vision of a nature-inclusive city where people and nature thrive together. Through our biodiverse green facades and wildlife provisions, we aim to enhance biodiversity and improve the quality of urban environments. With our innovative approach to green facades and wildlife provisions, we help create richer urban habitats, support building dwelling species and contribute to a more sustainable future.

In many cities around the world, urbanisation is increasing while green space is declining. This trend has a negative impact on nature and on the wellbeing of both people and wildlife. In response, we have focused on developing solutions that bring greenery back into the city while improving habitat for a wide range of species. Through our biodiverse green facades, green roofs and wildlife provisions, we help create healthier, more resilient and nature-inclusive urban environments.

Cooperation Bird Protection

As urban shrubs disappear and low maintenance gardens become the norm, the importance of green facades continues to grow. They help replace the lost shrub layer and provide essential nesting sites and shelter for shrub nesting bird species. In this way, the facade becomes a new green zone within the urban ecosystem.

Sicco Jansen

Sicco speaking

“Green facades are still too often seen as visual features. In reality, facades are building elements with enormous potential for wildlife. By taking a habitat focused approach, exceptionally rich green facades can be created. Vertical microhabitats that can potentially support more than one hundred species. A green facade with native climbing plants, integrated nest boxes and insect features creates a vertical habitat that provides nectar sources, shelter and nesting opportunities. This provides food for pollinators from April to November, supports moths during the summer months and offers roosting opportunities for bats in autumn. The microclimate created between the vegetation and the facade retains warmth, allowing even winter active species to benefit.”
