This hedgehog shelter is specially designed to provide a safe and secure shelter for hedgehogs. For the best results, place the shelter in a quiet and sheltered location.
Application
During development projects, natural hedgehog shelters may be lost. In such cases, installing a hedgehog box provides a suitable alternative shelter. In addition, hedgehog boxes can also be used to strengthen an existing habitat.
Design
The box is constructed from solid 18 mm thick, water-resistant plywood. On the outside, the box is finished with a green paint coating. The inside is untreated so that it can absorb moisture, preventing the box from becoming damp. The box consists of an entrance tunnel, a porch area and the actual shelter space. Small ventilation openings are incorporated in the bottom of the box. If the inside of the box becomes slightly damp, the lid can be left slightly open to create additional ventilation.
Position
Place the box in a dark, quiet location in a garden, preferably along a hedgehog route. A location in or under a dense shrub is most suitable. Cover the box with a layer of branches.
Installation
The provision should be installed on a dry surface. If required, a suitable base can be created using a thin layer of gravel or a paving slab. Place the box and, if desired, add a thick layer of dry leaves in the shelter space (filling it to about halfway). The lid of the box can optionally be covered with a piece of plastic for additional protection. Occasionally check that the box does not become damp inside. If this happens, leave the lid slightly open to allow more ventilation.
