Biodivers groendak leggen met EcoRoof Cassettes op prefab bergingen in Holten

Biodiversity green roof in Holten | EcoHabitatRoof

Installing a biodiverse green roof on 21 prefabricated storage units in Holten

The assignment

In Holten, we joined forces with FramePlus to install our innovative biodiverse green roof system on no fewer than 21 prefabricated storage units. Working closely together, we developed a green roof solution specifically designed for use on prefabricated storage buildings, combining practical installation with enhanced biodiversity benefits.

The idea for a biodiverse green roof originated from the growing demand for nature-inclusive solutions that FramePlus was seeing in the market. More and more people are recognising the value of measures that support biodiversity and strengthen the connection between the built environment and nature. This biodiverse green roof is a great example of how we responded to that demand. We are proud to have had the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the local environment in Holten while supporting biodiversity and the wellbeing of local wildlife.

Methodology

With our practical EcoRoofCassettes, installing a green roof becomes remarkably straightforward. The cassettes feature a simple click-and-go system, allowing them to connect seamlessly without complex installation procedures. This makes them easy to install, even for those with limited technical experience.
Installation is not the only aspect designed with convenience in mind. The EcoRoofCassettes can also be removed just as easily if maintenance, inspections or future modifications are required. By focusing on ease of use and flexibility, we make biodiverse green roofs more accessible and practical, while helping more people benefit from the advantages of biodiversity, climate resilience and urban greening.

Advantages

A biodiverse green roof offers a wide range of benefits that are not only good for the environment, but also for the living environment and overall quality of living space. Let’s take a closer look at some of these benefits:

1. Lightweight and suitable for retrofit projects: Thanks to the lightweight design of our EcoRoofCassettes, this biodiverse green roof system is particularly well suited to retrofit projects. It places only a minimal load on the existing structure, allowing even older buildings to benefit from the advantages of a green roof without requiring major structural modifications.
2. Water retention: Green roofs act as natural sponges, retaining significant volumes of rainwater. This not only helps reduce the risk of flooding, but also allows rainwater to be released gradually back into the environment. As a result, pressure on urban drainage systems is reduced, while valuable rainwater is managed in a more sustainable and climate-resilient way.
3. Improved air quality: Air pollution remains a common challenge in urban environments. Green roofs help improve air quality by filtering airborne pollutants and absorbing carbon dioxide. This contributes to a healthier living environment and enhances the overall quality of life for residents in urban areas.
4. Cooling effect: A biodiverse green roof acts as a natural insulating layer, helping to keep buildings cooler during the summer months. This can reduce the need for mechanical cooling and improve indoor comfort. Green roofs also help mitigate the urban heat island effect, where temperatures in built-up areas are often significantly higher than in the surrounding countryside.

In short, our biodiverse green roof is far more than an attractive addition to a building. It delivers tangible benefits for biodiversity, climate resilience, urban living environments and building energy performance, making it a practical and future-proof investment for both property owners and local communities.

An easy click-and-go system

Create a truly biodiverse green roof with Unitura’s EcoRoofCassette. Each pre-grown cassette contains a carefully selected mix of no fewer than forty native plant species, chosen to thrive in rooftop conditions. This exceptional species diversity allows a rich and varied vegetation layer to develop, delivering significantly greater biodiversity value than a traditional sedum roof.
A wide range of native wildflowers and herbaceous species has been intentionally included within the cassettes. The vegetation that develops will vary depending on local conditions such as sun exposure, shade, roof height and available moisture. As a result, each installation develops its own unique character. Thanks to this broad species mix, EcoRoofCassettes can be successfully applied in a wide variety of situations without producing the same uniform vegetation community on every roof.
