Unitura was commissioned to make a stately office building in Rijssen more nature-inclusive. The challenge here lay in the architecture; the interventions should not disrupt the character of the building. The client sought a solution for more greenery on the facade and the integration of various nesting boxes.
Therefore, we looked for a low-impact but effective system. By combining wild honeysuckle with wisteria, we created a result that is both ecologically valuable and visually appealing.
For the realization we used our own Climbers system. We installed two sturdy climbing wires around each masonry post. At the foot of these wires we planted a well thought-out combination of climbing plants. The wisteria provides spectacular blooms and a luxurious look. The native wild honeysuckle adds high ecological value.
This plant combination attracts many insects and pollinators. Because we used Unitura’s unique stainless steel climbing aid system, the structure is very durable. The system also looks fresh and neat. Even in winter, when the planting is less lush, the Climbers system remains a sleek addition to the facade.
In addition to the green facade, we also added habitats for wildlife. On the upper corners of the office building, we built in nesting boxes for birds and bats. For the birds, we specifically chose a house sparrow box. This type of nesting box is very versatile. In fact, in addition to house sparrows, various species of titmice also frequently use this facility.
The combination of nesting opportunities at high elevations and green shelters lower on the facade works extremely well. In fact, the wisteria and wild honeysuckle provide a safe route and food source for the fauna present. This creates a vertical ecosystem that fits perfectly within the built environment of Rijssen.
The result in Rijssen shows that nature-inclusive building also has great added value at business locations. The stainless steel Climbers® climbing aid system guarantees a long life span and requires minimal maintenance. By combining wild honeysuckle with wisteria, the client enjoys a facade that changes appearance every season.
