How do I hang a bat box?

A bat box is best installed on the facade of a building. Ideally, the front of the box should face south or south west, as bats benefit from warmer conditions. Choose a quiet and sheltered location with minimal disturbance from people or pets. Key considerations:

• The entrance opening should be clear – so no branches or leaves in front of it.
• Choose a spot sheltered from strong winds.
• Minimum height: 3 meters. Higher is also allowed.
• Hanging can be done all year, but preferably before spring.

At what height should a bat box be hung?

A bat box should hang at least 3 feet high. At that height, bats feel safer and are more likely to inhabit them. For some species and larger boxes (such as maternity boxes or winter boxes), 4 to 5 meters is even better.

Can you lure bats with a box?

You cannot actively lure bats like birds, but you can increase the likelihood that they will use the hive. You do this by:

• Choosing the right cabinet for your location.
• Multiple cabinets to hang with different orientations.
• Choose a quiet, warm and sheltered spot with free approach route.
• To provide a natural environment with plenty of insects.

How do I know if my bat box is occupied?

Bats are quiet and discreet, so it is sometimes hard to notice. Possible signs:

• Small, dark pellets under the box.
• You can see bats circling at sunset.
• A warmer spot at the back of the nestbox may indicate activity.

Note: Never open a nestbox yourself to check. Bats are protected by law.

Are bat boxes mandatory when renovating or demolishing?

Yes, when working on buildings where bats may reside, a bat box may be required as a mitigation measure. Ecological consulting firms often determine this during a quick scan. In such cases, temporary and permanent bat boxes are a permit requirement.

What is the difference between a maternity bat box and a standard bat box?

• A maternity bat box is specifically designed for female bats and their young. These boxes are typically warmer, larger and contain multiple compartments, providing the stable conditions required by maternity colonies during the breeding season.
• An enclosure is intended for general use – for example, as a resting place or summer home.
