Small bat boxes

Small bat boxes suitable as summer habitat

Small bat boxes are designed specifically for mitigation of bat habitat of single individuals of the common and rough legged bat in particular. There are several cabinets available that fall into this category. Such as our permanent bat boxes or temporary bat boxes

Bat population

Small bat boxes are used by bats throughout much of the year. Bats are an important part of our ecosystem and play a valuable role in controlling insect populations. Unfortunately, the loss of natural roosting opportunities is placing increasing pressure on bat populations. Bat boxes provide a safe and comfortable roosting environment and offer a simple and effective way to support the conservation of these important species.

Why are small bat boxes important?

Bats require roosting opportunities to rest, shelter and raise their young. As a result of insulation works and the loss of traditional access points within buildings, suitable roosts are becoming increasingly scarce. Bat boxes provide a safe and comfortable roosting environment, helping bats to rest, shelter and establish maternity roosts where appropriate.

Ecosystem

Bats also play an important role in our ecosystem. They feed on large numbers of insects, including species that can be harmful to crops and other vegetation, providing a natural form of pest control. By installing bat boxes, we help support the conservation of these important species and contribute to a healthier and more balanced ecosystem.

How do small bat boxes work?

Our bat boxes have been specifically designed to meet the requirements of bats. They provide a safe and comfortable roosting environment where bats can rest, shelter and, where appropriate, establish maternity roosts.
The boxes are manufactured from durable woodcrete in our own production facility and feature a discreet access slot on the underside, allowing bats to enter and exit safely. To maximise their effectiveness, bat boxes should be installed in suitable locations around a building. A variety of positions is recommended, with locations beneath roof edges often providing the most favourable conditions. Distributing bat boxes across different elevations and orientations helps create a range of microclimates that can be used by different bat species throughout the year.

How can I contribute?

Placing bat boxes is an easy way to contribute to bat conservation. Here are some tips to help you install bat boxes:

  1. Place the boxes in a suitable location: Place the nestboxes in a sheltered location, without obstacles or artificial light. They should also be placed at a height of at least 3 meters, preferably on a tree or building. Positions along the eaves give the fastest chance of occupancy.
  2. Install multiple boxes: Installing multiple boxes increases the likelihood that bats will find and use the boxes. Place them at different heights and in different directions to give bats different options.
  3. Place boxes at the right time: If the hives are placed under the Nature Conservation Act, it is often necessary to place the hives before a certain time. This is often before February 15 or before April 1.
  4. Ask us for advice on installing small bat boxes. We can help you determine the best location and type of box suitable for your project.
